When it comes to style, is there too much freedom?

May 13th, 2010

Lucky for too many–the “fashion police” is merely a media fabrication. But admittedly as I sat in a NYC subway today, I was astonished at how inured society is to bad taste. I seemed to be the only one who gazed at the half-naked woman (in her early 40s perhaps and at least 200 lbs). She lazily sipped her drink and was oblivious to my stare. She was wearing a black bra that left 5″ of voluptuous cleavage exposed. A black spandex dress sausaged what could not be contained. Upon exiting at 50th and 7th–low and behold was another vision– that surely tempted fate.... Read More

Mother of the Bridge/Groom

January 14th, 2010

One of my readers submitted a suggestion recently… Dear Sherrie “I finally have both your books and have read and re-read them. I\’m so glad that I can copy certain styles (looking at the models who have a similar body shape to mine), colors (thanks for including redheads – we\’re often overlooked), and combinations/accessories. If you\’re ever wondering what to write a blog on, I would really appreciate one entitled Mother of the Bride/Groom. I know there are some ideas in your books – love both the orange and the gold top/pants combos, but these might be... Read More

To cut, or to grow?

December 14th, 2009

“To cut, or to grow?” that is the question…..in considering your hair style (and thereby influence your whole image!). In “Growing Pains” Kennedy Fraser (Vogue, Dec 2009, p174) “recalls the chapters of her life through the cuts that defined her—and the long hair she dreamed of again.” Interestingly in one of the last issues of Vogue I noted a group photo of new models. Almost all (with just a few exceptions) had long flowing tresses. It truly seems a symbol of youth! Never before has short-cropped hair been more a symbol of an older woman. And wearing it... Read More

It may feel counter-intuitive-but –

October 20th, 2009

“Putting on the Best Face, Naturally” by Ruth La Ferla in the NY Times..Friday, September 25, 2009…began this way At New York Fashion Week, the wizards of the hair and makeup worlds turned their backs on the sumptuously lacquered looks of fall, approaching the new season with a lighter hand. To reinforce looks that ranged from robustly bohemian to languid and ethereal, most were sparing with paint box and spray, and even opted at times to let nature take its course. WOW! I though to myself–finally they are showing a look on the runway that real women can adopt. It\’s the philosophy... Read More

Do we love short shorts?

August 31st, 2009

Do we love short shorts? Or is the discussion about something more important than the-long-or-the-short of it?….. What\’s it all about when we discuss Michelle Obama\’s wearing short shorts and their appropriateness? The Huffington Post had thousands of votes and opinions on it. WOW! Here\’s my two cents worth. First–I have to sympathize with any celebrity who gets to be the focus of constant attention (but it\’s part of the deal in exchange for the obvious upside). Every time I see a tabloid make the most of a private vacation frolic by the sea to expose cellulite... Read More
