Who is Really in Control?

February 19th, 2009

A good sales person knows how to negotiate. But do they go too far when trying to get more money out of their company that offers them job security and already a salary most sales people would line up for, especially in this down market? After all, most of us are watching our dollars and cannot afford to give every last dime to an employee at the risk of operating at a loss. “S” as I will refer to her, is a sales person for me in one of our offices. She does a great job of networking and opening accounts. When she needed an assistant to help keep her straight, we approved this. When she needed... Read More

The Professional Woman\’s Business Plan

September 18th, 2007

As women professionals and business owners, every one of us should be working with a business plan. To me, this is a workable, upgradeable document that explains in some detail your plans to develop a financially successful business. This is important for two reasons: 1. Preparing a business plan forces you to think through every aspect of your business. If you need outside money, your business plan will be one of the first things the lender or investor will want to see. 2. A business plan helps serve as your road map and assessment tool. A good business plan contains an executive summary. This... Read More

How to Succeed in Business without Really Crying

August 30th, 2007

“The job is easy. It\’s the people that are difficult!” How many times have we said that? During my years as an administrator in nonprofit organizations, I saw a variety of behaviors that did not promote professionalism. The following are my observations: Managers do not cry. They negotiate. Kelly was a well-respected leader in her field. She had been in middle management and came to our organization, not understanding the amount of clerical work involved in her position. Probably out of frustration, she was frequently reduced to tears. Kelly was the coordinator of our annual three-day... Read More

Baby Boomer Woman Gives Birth

August 23rd, 2007

This time last year I had only an idea; no name, no website, no contacts, no potential customers, no business experience … just an idea to sell wicking pajamas and a burning feeling that it needed to be pursued. I was like a puppy with a slipper; I couldn\’t let it go. I was driven to explore the possibilities, and despite the fact that I was jumping into an arena which was so foreign to me, I just knew I had to take that jump. This tremendous leap of faith, belief in myself, and following of my inner voice, has provided me with more gifts and abundance than I ever could have imagined.... Read More
