This book, published in 2017, promises to be everything you need to know to plan for your own safe, financially secure, healthy, and happy old age. It’s an important theme, because so many of us Baby Boomers have been too busy dealing with the needs of the here and now to have any time to plan for the future.

But, the fact is, if we don’t have a support system in place, the mere thought of how we’re going to handle our lives in the future can be a scary thought. Especially, if you, like me, have recently been dealing with assisting a parent or other loved one, who cannot live alone. I know that taking care of my mother over the last 18 months of her life pretty much became a second full-time job for me. And I wasn’t her only support. She lived in an assisted living facility. And beyond their staff and her children, she also hired other specialists as needed.

Author Joy Loverde

Author Loverde promises that growing old does not have to be an inevitable decline into helplessness. The book points the way to maintaining a good quality of life in our later years, but makes very clear that having a plan is essential. The very readable text and the many worksheets are designed to equip readers with everything we to prepare for the future including:

  • Advice on the tough medical, financial, and housing decisions to come
  • Real solutions to create a support network
  • Questions about aging solo readers don’t know to ask
  • Customizable worksheets and checklists that help keep plans on course
  • Guidance on new products, services, technology, and resources

Loverde offers practical ideas on important topics like how to become better at socializing (even if you consider yourself shy) so you can enjoy more social support. She also offers provocative ideas like having a funeral before you die.

In summary, it’s likely that as you read this book, you’ll constantly find yourself saying, “Great idea, I’m doing that.” And probably even more often, “I’ve never thought of that before!”

Highly recommended.
