Working from home? Setting Boundaries will Preserve Your Sanity

July 7th, 2010

Like many women entrepreneurs, I work out of my home and love it. I\’ve done some of my best writing sitting in the “comfy chair” in my “jammies.” (That\’s the best part.) Unfortunately, the comfy chair is in the garden room in front of the TV. It\’s also next to the kitchen, so I have basically hogged all of the communal living space as my office. I was constantly interrupted by the rest of the family (what nerve!) and began to feel like I was anchored to that chair. Something had to change! OK, someone had to change…. ME! I confess that I actually had a home office.... Read More

Holding a Diva Garage Sale – Part I

July 7th, 2010

…An excerpt from Tossed & Found Be Prepared Selling used goods from a driveway, a yard or the interior of a home has been referred to as a garage sale, yard sale or tag sale. People hold these homespun events to raise money and rid their homes of all the unwanted things that have collected over the years. Although these sales are a lot of work, they are a great way to purge a home and turn unwanted things into big profits. The following schedule outlines how tasks can be chunked-down into manageable parts, rendering a gargantuan job … doable, turning even the wildest project into... Read More

Urinary Tract Infections – 6 Ways to Prevent Them During Menopause

July 7th, 2010

Urinary tract infections are one of the most common bacterial infections in women. This female tract is more susceptible to infections during menopause due to a reduction in hormonal support from the body. This system is meant to remove the body\’s fluid wastes and is more vulnerable to multiplication of bacteria which can lead to a nasty infection. Though not typically serious, they can be very painful and most often the symptoms disappear quickly after treatment with antibiotics. Most women experience this kind of infection at least once in their lifetimes, often caused by sexual intercourse.... Read More

Perseverance

July 7th, 2010

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart. – Proverbs 3:3 I attended a meeting for writers where an author spoke and gave many wonderful tips on how to get published in children’s magazines. She knows whereof she speaks, having been published over 400 times. When we ooh-ed and ah-ed over her body of work, she hastened to say she has probably had at least four times that many rejections – more in the beginning. That’s 1,600! But even in being rejected, she was never dejected. She looked to the future, and when receiving that... Read More

To spank or not to spank your grandchild – Does force send the wrong message?

July 7th, 2010

By: Dr. Lillian Carson Reprinted with permission by GRAND Magazine Q. Lately my 4-year old grandson refuses to do what I ask. I find myself losing my temper and giving him a good spanking. I spanked my kids, and they’ve grown up okay. His parents don’t like spanking. Who’s right? Spanking Nana A. Your spanking probably subdues your grandson but misses an opportunity to help him learn self control, responsibility and the consequences of his actions. A child’s behavior is his language, the way he expresses himself. Ask yourself what he’s telling you. Are you expecting too much for his... Read More

Is It Healthy Love or “Love” Addiction?

July 7th, 2010

Since we all have grown up in a society that confuses healthy love with “love” addiction, many of us find it difficult to know whether our feelings are based on healthy intimacy or addictive desire. Based on my work over the last 45 year\’s as a psychotherapist specializing in helping people develop and maintain healthy relationships, I offer the following comparison. Healthy Love develops after we feel secure. Addictive Love tries to create love even though we feel frightened and insecure. Healthy Love comes from feeling full. We overflow with love. Addictive Love is always trying... Read More

July 7th, 2010

For many of us the biggest challenge in our day comes at night. We find it almost impossible to simply put down the fork, push away from the dinner table and move on into the night without finding our minds drifting towards food. It would be lovely to be without the obsessive food thoughts — to make space for a peaceful, calm and soulful evening. Wouldn\’t it? I have worked out an easy and yes, brilliant strategy that you can follow! Step by Step Guide: How to Beat the Nighttime Eats! Step 1. Upon Entering (after a long day\’s work or outing): Music activates the same feel good... Read More

Menopause the Musical – Have you Seen It?

July 7th, 2010

Yup, this play has been around since 2001, but I saw it for the first time last Saturday night. As the playbill states, Menopause the Musical has been seen by nearly 11 million women in over 250 cities in 14 countries. Obviously, I\’m a bit late to the party, but it was worth it. The play cleverly and hilariously parodies popular songs – the refrain Chain, Chain, Chain from “Chain of Fools” becomes Change, Change, Change; “Stayin\’ Alive” transforms into Stayin\’ Awake; “I\’m Sorry” morphs into I\’m Flashing, and “Puff, The Magic Dragon” is now Puff,... Read More
