Moving Forward: Part II

March 11th, 2008

…by Prill Boyle To be successful in any endeavor, you have to stick with it. And that\’s a lot easier to accomplish when you\’re doing what you enjoy. Passion is the purest fuel around. But even when you\’re doing what you love, it\’s easy to lose steam. Whether you\’re an aspiring novelist like me, an established businesswoman, or an astronaut, it takes an enormous commitment of time and energy to keep a dream moving forward. So if you\’re in danger of stalling, here are a few things to try: Divide your goal into smaller steps. When I complained... Read More

PAST OR FUTURE?

March 11th, 2008

Watching a rerun of “What Not to Wear” on The Learning Channel, I was struck by the dialogue between the individual being transformed and the cast of experts. While agreeing to follow the advice and input from these style-masters, “Joyce” was closed to the ideas presented of what she should wear, how her hair should be cut, and her make-up enhanced. Her resistance sounded familiar. It echoed reasons proclaimed by people at work who cling to their comfort zones, eager to maintain the status quo, not rock the boat, or stick with the same skills. These people are past-focused,... Read More

How Ill-Mannered Are You?

March 11th, 2008

After I did a bit of research on etiquette, I was shocked to learn that my family is made up of a bunch of ill-mannered heathens. And, if I were to be perfectly honest, I\’d have to say that I\’m in violation myself and therefore, not a candidate of the Emily Post Manner Award. How does your family measure up?| The Rules of Etiquette One should: * arrive at least 10 minutes early unless otherwise specified. (Whatever happened to fashionably late?) * pass food from the left to right. (So if someone is on my left, should I pass it around the table?) * pass both the salt and pepper together,... Read More

The Price is Right

March 11th, 2008

Thinking of selling your home when you retire? Recent research may help you determine an asking price. A Cornell University study, led by marketing professor Manoj Thomas in September 2007, found that people are willing to pay more for a home if the listing price is exact – that is, rather than trying to sell your home for $425,000, list it at $424,475. Why does this work? There is psychological benefit to precise numbers – people tend to think numbers that end in digits are smaller than those that end in lots of zeroes. The study included reviewing almost 30,000 home sales in areas... Read More

Good Times for Empty Nesters

March 11th, 2008

I have received emails from parents saying, “I can\’t believe it. I am having fun in my empty nest.” Sure their face brightens when the children call or come to visit. A father said to a friend when they were waiting in line for the movies, “Watch her face (referring to the mother in line) when I ask about how her daughter is doing. The mother instantly grins, eyes twinkle and she gets very talkative.” I don\’t think that reaction needs to be changed. What has changed, slowly, is parents are enjoying their free time and the silence in their home. They are changing... Read More

Organizing Yourself for the “Eldercare Stage”

March 11th, 2008

It\’s virtually impossible to accurately predict the extent or length of the commitment to eldercare but for many caregivers, it\’s a lot longer than they ever imagined. In fact, in last month\’s column, I mentioned an interview with Roberta Satow for my Expert Interview Series (http://agewiseliving.com/shop-expert_interviews.htm), in which she talks about caregiving as “a stage of life”. She explains that, unlike our parents who provided care for their parents for an average of 1-5 years, our own parents are living a lot longer now. So that means we could be facing... Read More

Are you sneezing and wheezing?

March 11th, 2008

Spring is filled with flowers, green grass, and for some…sneezing, wheezing and runny eyes and noses! The most likely cause of spring allergies is tree pollen. However, mold and animal dander can also be contributing. How can you know for sure? Get allergy tested. If your doctor can pinpoint the cause of your symptoms, the therapy can be tailored to what you need. Treatment could involve allergy shots or medications that can help you to avoid a lot of grief. How can you tell the difference between allergies and a cold? Both can cause a runny nose and eyes, but a cold usually has fever, aches... Read More

March 11th, 2008

Achieving balance in our lives is accomplished by saying no when we need to and learning to set priorities. And we cannot achieve balance without understanding what our particular needs are. Balance is different for everyone. It means that you have identified your priorities and have not overextended yourself. Balance means you are aware of the dangers of burnout. Balance means that when asked the question, “Are you happy?” you can answer yes. The following are 4 core values I use to live a balanced life and achieve my dreams easier. One–No Guilt Allowed One of the biggest struggles... Read More
