Dear
Boomer Sisters (and Women of All Ages):
Don’t
be misled by the subtitle of my book, For My Next Act…Women
Scripting Life after Fifty. Fifty is a nice, round number that
makes a good title for a book, and those starting-a-new-decade birthdays
often serve as landmarks on our journeys. Fifty also happens to
be when I went through a life-changing experience: my husband of
30 years left me a week after I turned the big 5-0.
But as boomers,
we’re all – no matter our precise age – thinking
about some or all of these issues: aging parents, changing bodies
(oh, those hot flashes!), teenagers, departing or so-called “grown”
children, re-discovering our spouses after the children have (we
hope) left home, divorce and dating, or deepening our priceless
friendships with other women. Many of us are also looking for ways
to focus on what is most important in our lives, whether that means
finding work that feels meaningful, thinking about religious or
spiritual issues, or figuring out how we can make a difference in
this crazy world.
You may be going
through some of these changes now, or feeling vague stirrings of
a desire to make some transitions in your life. I know, from the
women I’ve met at workshops, conferences and book signings,
that this can happen in your forties, fifties or later.
Most of us don’t
have clear role models as we navigate the changes of middle age
(don’t you hate that term?) because we are not like our mothers.
No surprise there. As baby boomers we’ve broken ground throughout
our lives. Even now, we’re inventing our lives as we go. One
thing we do have, however, is each other. As we stand poised on
the threshold to the next act of our lives, we can learn from each
other how to reclaim or reinvent our best and truest selves.
I’m looking
forward to “meeting you,” virtually speaking, soon.
Regards,
Karen
