Widows: Your Wanderlust and Wishes

July 14th, 2015

By Phyllis Stoller NABBW’s Associate for Group Travel Please share with friends who have lost a partner! Let me start by saying these  thoughts come from talking to you out there and from my friends. Traveling as a widow is not the same kind of travel. It can still be a meaningful experience with highs, lows and new memories. Some women use women’s travel as part of ‘re-entry’ after losing a partner. Here is our site: www.thewomenstravelgroup.com for reference. Your home social circle talks to you with unwanted pity and empathetic glances.  In a travel group, no one knows your... Read More

July 11th, 2015

By Linda Ballou NABBW’s  Adventure Travel Associate Situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles in sun-kissed San Luis Obispo is the Apple Farm Inn, a perfect place to shake off the road dust. The Inn is easily accessed off of Highway 101, and its steaming outdoor spa and cool pool are guaranteed to smooth out the kinks. Stroll the delightful gardens overlooked by a saw mill replete with a working water wheel reminiscent of days gone by. SLO, as locals call it, is nestled in the heart of California’s wine country. Gracious hosts at the Apple Farm offer complimentary wines between... Read More

Glacier Bay: A Place You MUST Come and See

May 8th, 2015

By Linda Ballou, NABBW’s Adventure Travel Associate John Muir explored the fiords of Glacier Bay in 1879 in a sixty-foot, spruce canoe with a Tlingit Indian guide. I’m glad to be aboard The Spirit of Adventure, a 150- passenger catamaran with two glass-enclosed decks to roam, and an open deck on top for viewing. Our Captain, a jaunty young woman with a ponytail down to her waist, is wearing a crisp naval white and blue uniform. The introduction to the cruise, given by the ship’s naturalist, a national park ranger, is interrupted by the sighting of a sow with two cubs. While I scan the... Read More

Senior-focused Tips for Enjoying Summer Travel

April 15th, 2015

By Phyllis Stoller, NABBW’s Associate for Group Travel A few tips for traveling when you are older but not less adventurous. Summer brings crowds in airports and on the plane. Here are a few tips designed to help Seniors to survive the Summer crush: Bring some food for airport hunger. Some of the larger airports- Atlanta comes to mind, have much less food available than passengers who are hungry. Others are so large- Dallas for instance, that you might use up your available time just finding the gate. Alas water can only be purchased in the secure areas of airports but more stores sell... Read More

Why Namibia? Why Now?

March 4th, 2015

By Sandra Colony for the NABBW When a co-worker first told me in 2000 that he was traveling to Namibia, I admit it was not on my radar. In fact I didn’t know how to pronounce it. But upon his return, listening to him rave about the marvels of the landscape, the abundance of wildlife and the friendliness of the people, I got intrigued. It took me 8 years to get there – I had to get to the top countries on my existing bucket list such as Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Ghana, and, just in time, Syria – before I booked a flight to Namibia. Now, having now been there on multiple trips and heading... Read More

An American Snowbird in Southern Spain

March 4th, 2015

By Teresa Roberts NABBW’s Associate for Living Abroad I’m in southern Spain —again. This time, I am here for two months, living in my own apartment. Last year, I came to Spain to find an apartment on the coast of Andalucía. My ultimate goal was to locate a place that could become my home-away-from-home for a number of years to come. Snowbirds in the U.S. tend to go to Florida, but this snowbird goes to southern Spain. I retired earlier than my husband and although he quit his job for two years and traveled the world with me on my pension, whenever we returned stateside for any length... Read More

Three Things You Need to Know Before You Travel in France

March 2nd, 2015

By Carolee Cameron NABBW’s Associate for Independent Travel   Before you travel to France, it is important, even essential, to know at least three things. First, be aware that French culture is different from American, but equally, if not more, genteel. French people are quintessentially polite and considerate. Before you interpret their behaviors, be fully aware of what these behaviors communicate in France. These meanings are not the same as they would be in the United States. For example, a delay in giving you your check at the end of a meal is certainly not indicative of poor service... Read More

Sun Damage is Cumulative, But It Might Not Be Too Late to Save the Skin You’re In

March 1st, 2015

By Linda Ballou NABBW’s Adventure Travel Associate  A glint of jealousy flashed in the eyes of my fellow adventurers on the jet boat ride out of the Grand Canyon when I whipped out my lightweight mask, secured it to the frame of my sunglasses, and turned to face 60-mile-an hour winds. This handy defense against the elements helped protect my skin from the wind and intense glare of the sun reflecting on the water. Less than an ounce of protection in my pack prevented me from receiving skin damage with no cure. In Alaska, where I grew up, it is said that there is no such thing as bad weather... Read More

Age and Travel: Who Is Too Old For Group Travel? Probably Not You!!

February 2nd, 2015

By Phyllis Stoller NABBW’s Associate for Group Travel  We were again asked this week whether The Women’s Travel Group has an age limit on the upper end? As you know, we regularly travel with women aged from 30 on up. But potential first-time WTG travelers still regularly ask us what the health standards are — not just to come along, but join the tour and be assured that they will be able to have fun. To best answer these questions, since your physical capabilities — and each trip — are unique, we like to answer with a few questions of our own, which I’m including... Read More

Going Local on Maui

January 15th, 2015

By Linda Ballou NABBW’s Adventure Travel Associate   Would you like to spend a week in Hawaii without having to cash in your 401K? Resorts with high-end amenities are lovely to stay in, but, for many, too costly to call home for a week. Air B&B offers rooms for rent from local hosts at very reasonable prices all over the world. I chose the Bicycle Inn in Paia, a walkable little town with several good eateries and fun shops close to the Kahului Airport on Maui. My digs were the master bed with a private bath in a three bedroom house with all the comforts of home. Two fantastic beaches... Read More
